In 2022, How Can You Make Money with A Travel Blog?

Even if most travel has been halted, now is not the time to relax. Dale, a travel blogger and the voice of Wander Her Way, says that 2022 is an excellent year to begin your blogging career. Dale discussed her experience earning money from a vacation site in this piece, as well as advice on how to generate and monetize blog material.

COVID-19 had an impact on numerous industries, but the tourism industry was one of the hardest damaged by the pandemic. As a result of the travel embargo, the bulk of travel bloggers saw their steady traffic and income vanish almost overnight.

For example, traffic to my travel blog fell by more than half at the beginning of March and has only slowly recovered since then.

If you haven’t already, 2022 is a fantastic year to start a travel blog. While demand for travel is still low, it is increasing, and now is an excellent moment to take advantage of it. Making money with a travel blog is definitely still doable today.

In 2022, here’s everything you need to know about vacation blogging!

In 2022, how should fresh content be written?

You’re not alone if you’re stumped as to what to write about on your travel blog right now.

It’s difficult to know what to write about when it comes to travel since the travel industry came to a halt for several months (and is still not entirely recovered in 2022).

Some travel bloggers have kept writing about prior trips for when travel resumes, while others have shifted to publishing more timely information about COVID-19 travel, travel-related things to do at home, and so on. Some well-known travel bloggers, such as Kiersten Rich of The Blonde Abroad, have even shifted their focus to non-travel topics such as recipes and lifestyle advice.

When everything returned to normal, I focused on writing about travel. For example, I wrote about the cheapest countries in Europe, advice for visiting New York at Christmas, and things to do in Salem, Massachusetts this past year. While the pandemic kept these travel recommendations from being as popular as I’d hoped, they’re evergreen blog entries that I expect to do well as demand for travel increases.

In comparison to more realistic plans, my “travel inspiration” blogs (like this list of fairytale towns in Europe) garnered a lot of attention even when the pandemic started and everything was locked down (like this guide to Lake Como.) This showed me that even if they weren’t actively arranging vacations, people still liked to read about them.

As you can see, my blog post about fairytale towns in Europe had a lot of traffic even during the summer, when travel to Europe was often impossible:

How To Earn Money with A Travel Blog

There are a lot of methods to make money with a travel blog, but I’m going to focus on the top three that worked for me in 2020 and 2021 and that I hope to keep doing in 2022.

Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is one of the most effective ways to monetize a travel blog, accounting for nearly 39% of my total revenue in 2020. Simply simple, you place a link on your blog and earn money if someone clicks on it and purchases something. This could be a link to a hotel reservation website, Airbnb, a tour business, Amazon, or something else entirely.

A list of travel affiliate programs can be found here.

In 2021, I worked with a number of affiliate programs. The majority of my affiliate sales came from Amazon (recommending travel gear and other travel-related products), Booking.com (hotel reservations), and Leisure Pass (leisure passes) (which sells attraction passes for cities like New York and London.) When the pandemic hit, hotel bookings and Leisure Pass sales plummeted, but Amazon remained stable throughout the year.

Because you get a commission on whatever someone has in their basket when they check out, the Amazon affiliate program is a terrific option for beginner affiliate marketers.

Advertising

Display advertising is another method to make money with a travel blog. Display advertising accounted for 43% of my entire travel bloggingrevenue in 2020. You are paid depending on RPM when you have adverts on your blog (revenue per one thousand impressions.) As a result, the more visitors your site receives, the more money you can earn from advertisements.

Writing substantial, thorough content that encourages readers to stay on your site for extended periods of time is one of the easiest ways to enhance your ad earnings once you’ve joined an ad network. You can also use interlinks to other entries in your blog to keep visitors interested.

Travel Blogging in The Future

Travel blogging had a challenging year in 2020. People are becoming more comfortable with travel again as the pandemic draws to a close, and many are beginning to plan future trips. I predict that once the vaccine has been widely distributed, travel will begin to recover by the summer or fall of 2021. You should be able to make money from your travel blog in 2022 and beyond if you follow these guidelines.
